Shopping Slow | An Intentional Approach to Sales
There's an intentional chaotic + rushed marketing mentality surrounding big sale events that are intended to trigger many core fears + desires we hold as humans. The generated response is often successful - hence why every big retailer capitalizes on Prime Day. There is an intentional attention-grabbing, chaotic, visually over stimulating experience at play, one built upon FOMO, convenience and competitive pricing over design and user experience.
Missing out.
Not having enough.
Appealing to those we deem as important.
Masking insecurity with stuff or status.
Finding security in things or money.
I've found myself strangely averse to the mad dash to sales — slowing down and daily leaning into less. If you don't need it or can't afford it — how good of it deal is it really?
That being said, there can be an intentional approach to sales. One that is mindful, and cuts above the dash for more + better. I like to keep a list of things that I need and pay attention to sales as a way to mindfully invest while being intentional with our resources. Below, I’m sharing a few intentional questions that offer pause to the rush.
Questions to Ask before Shopping a Sale
No. 01 — Do I need this?
No. 02 — How will I use this?
No. 03 — What is my motivation for purchasing?
No. 04 — What can I eliminate in its place?
No. 05 — Would I consider saving for this at full price?
While Amazon is nearly my least favorite business to support, in this day and age there are a few things that are nearly impossible to find elsewhere or offer the best prices on larger appliances. Here is a list of things I regularly use + purchase that are on sale this week. Things like probiotic body wash, amber light bulbs, organic bedding and grounding mats. A few things on my list to purchase include containers for freezer meals, extra mason jar lids and dark colored sheets for postpartum. Our projector for lower-blue-light movie nights and air purifier are drastically discounted this week.
